Tips for Writing Testimony
It can be intimidating to stand up in front of a group of people and offer your views on a subject. But as advocates, we are called to educate others on issues that we believe will improve lung health in our state. Here are a few suggestions that may make that public hearing presentation a little easier:
- Identify the problem
- Support findings with data and put data in context so that the panel will understand the depth of the problem
- Be accurate
- Offer solutions
- Speak out about positive things as well as requesting change
- Communicate your message succinctly and keep it short, no more than 3 minutes
- Smile and say thank you
- If asked questions, be accurate with your answers, and don't be afraid to say, "I don't know, but I will find out and get back to you."
