Maine Gets Highest Marks in National, But Dropped a Grade!
** 2007 State of Tobacco Report Released January 10, 2008 **
Maine’s two-year record of perfect grades in tobacco control came to an end this year as the American Lung Association’s annual report card now shows that improvement is needed when it comes to cigarette tax rates. Despite receiving a “B” in taxes, Maine retained its spot at the national head of the class for its efforts to prevent and treat tobacco addiction. Maine’s new grades are now three “A’s” and a “B”.
All fifty states were graded on four areas of effort in tobacco control: restricting youth access to tobacco products, limiting exposure to secondhand smoke, discouraging demand through high prices, and funding a comprehensive tobacco prevention and treatment program. Maine’s award-winning efforts have caused youth smoking rates to drop by over 60% since 1997.
